At RANCH, we believe the most powerful campaigns start with real people and real stories. When Essex County Council launched its Early Years Childcare Reforms Expansion, the goal was clear: help families and childcare providers better understand the funding and support available across Essex.



Our role was to bring that message to life through authentic, inclusive photography - capturing the everyday moments that define early childhood education and care. 

The Opportunity

The Childcare Reforms Expansion brings together several strands of support designed to strengthen early years provision across Essex, including:

• Funded Early Education Entitlement (FEEE)
• Wraparound childcare
• Special Educational Needs and Inclusion Funding (SENIF)
• Out of Schools Inclusion Funding (OOSIF)

These programmes are vital in helping children access quality education and care during their most formative years. But communicating them effectively requires more than policy explanations - it requires imagery that reflects the reality of families, providers, and children across the county.

That’s where RANCH came in.

Our Approach

As experienced commercial photographers in Essex, our focus was on creating imagery that feels natural, diverse, and representative of the communities ECC supports.

We photographed a range of early years environments - from nurseries and childminders to wraparound provision - capturing children learning, playing, and connecting with those around them.

Inclusion was central to the project. The imagery highlights children of different backgrounds, abilities, and ages, reflecting the diversity of Essex itself. Where possible, we also captured children using accessibility equipment and those with SEND interacting with their peers, ensuring the photography represents childcare settings as they truly are: welcoming, supportive, and inclusive.

The result is a visual library that helps families see themselves reflected in ECC’s childcare services.
